Analogue | David Gillanders

Studio Sixty Six, 858 Bank Street #unit 101, Ottawa, ON K1S 3W3

August 18 – September 24, 2023

In painting, something truly special happens when materials come together. They go beyond themselves and create a canvas filled with deep meaning. When colors are carefully applied and arranged, they can stir our feelings and make us think deeply. It’s like a kind of magic that transports us to another world, captivating our senses. The physical world is incredibly powerful in this way.

Constructed Recollection | Leslie Hossack

Studio Sixty Six, 858 Bank Street #unit 101, Ottawa, ON K1S 3W3

August 18 – September 24, 2023

This project explores the idea that colors can tell a personal story. The images represent the artist’s childhood memories through colors, much like a unique DNA. The entire collection was created digitally, and the color palette used is inspired by the vibrant colors of the 1950s, a defining era for a generation. Each color in the collection is named and cataloged with its sRGB value, creating a color chart that reflects the artist’s early years.

Al Asnaam: The People Participating Seismometer

Arts Court, 2 Daly Avenue, Ottawa, ON

May 5, 2023 – October 31, 2023

The exhibition epitomizes Geuer’s belief that the closer they can come to understanding the physics of our environment, the more they will appreciate our responsibility to it. The work consists of a horizontal pendulum that is calibrated to react to seismic activity in the bedrock. A laser beam projection directed at the wall responds to any and all motion in the space, creating brilliant swaths of red light. The addition of audience participation, through movement, is integral to the experience of Al Asnaam and reinforces the connectivity of humans to each other and to the ecosystems they inhabit and impact.

Mairi Brascoupé | Chickadees and Flowers

Ottawa Art Gallery, 50 Mackenzie King Bridge, Ottawa, Ontario

June 13, 2023 – June 13, 2025

Birch Bark Biting is an early form of mark-making done by Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island where birch trees are present. These bitings were, and continue to be used to illustrate stories, as a pattern for beadwork and artistic expression. They are created by using very thin pieces of birch bark, and with your teeth an image is bitten into the bark. This piece is a digitization of a birch bark biting that has then been reproduced through risograph printing. The biting can be interpreted as chickadees flying around flowers.
